The Jones Act enables seamen to be compensated for maritime injuries resulting from the negligence of their employers or co-workers during the course of their employment on a vessel.
The Jones Act provides that the owner of the vessel owes a seaman the duty to provide a seaworthy vessel. A vessel is seaworthy if:
- It is reasonably fit for its intended use;
- It is equipped with appropriate equipment and safety gear;
- It has a competent crew; and
- It is a safe place to live and work.
Just because a vessel is seaworthy when it leaves shore, it can still become unseaworthy at some point offshore.
If you or a family member has been injured while working at sea because of your employer's negligence, a coworker's negligence, or because of an unseaworthy vessel, hire an experienced Texas maritime injury attorney to investigate your claim.
